Sarah Korb tells us what it’s like to work and live on board. After many years in catering on land, she ventured onto a ship and now works on the Hapag-Lloyd Cruises expedition fleet. In this interview, she talks about her everyday life, unforgettable moments and why working on the high seas is much more than just a job.<\/p>\n
Sarah, how did you come to work on the expedition fleet today?<\/strong><\/p>\n I had long dreamed of working on a cruise ship. In 2023, I made up my mind and applied to sea chefs – and was accepted shortly afterwards. My first assignment took me to the HANSEATIC spirit in September 2024 – in the middle of the breathtaking nature of Greenland. A real goosebump moment!<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Unforgettable encounters with nature \u2013 another perk of working at sea chefs.<\/p>\n What did you do before you joined sea chefs?<\/strong><\/p>\n I worked in the catering industry for many years, most recently as a restaurant manager in Frankfurt for almost eight years. I loved the work – but at some point I felt the need for a change. For something big and unusual. And that’s exactly what I’ve found here.<\/p>\n What are your tasks and responsibilities in your current position?<\/strong><\/p>\n As Chef de Rang in the main restaurant, I am responsible for my own station and often accompany guests throughout their journey. I make sure that the service runs smoothly, attentively and at the highest level at all times. I cater to individual requests, pay attention to every detail and work closely with an international team of service, galley (kitchen) and sommeliers.<\/p>\n What makes working and living on board so special?<\/strong><\/p>\n It’s the combination: high-quality service, teamwork in a confined space and discovering the world at the same time. No two days are the same. I meet exciting people from all over the world, develop professionally – and wake up in a different place every day. What else could you want?<\/p>\n Is there a moment that you particularly remember?<\/strong><\/p>\n Definitely the journey through Tower Bridge in London. The music, the light, the scenery – a real highlight! I’ll also never forget ice swimming in Greenland. Of course, it takes openness, flexibility and the courage to embark on a completely new life. Ich hatte schon lange den Traum, einmal auf einem Kreuzfahrtschiff zu arbeiten. 2023 habe ich dann N\u00e4gel mit K\u00f6pfen gemacht, mich bei sea chefs beworben \u2013 und wenig sp\u00e4ter die Zusage bekommen. Mein erster Einsatz f\u00fchrte mich im September 2024 auf die HANSEATIC spirit \u2013 mitten in die atemberaubende Natur Gr\u00f6nlands. Ein echter G\u00e4nsehautmoment!<\/p><\/p>
<\/strong>Ich war viele Jahre in der Gastronomie t\u00e4tig, zuletzt fast acht Jahre als Restaurantleitung in Frankfurt. Ich habe die Arbeit geliebt \u2013 aber irgendwann war der Wunsch nach Ver\u00e4nderung da. Nach etwas Gro\u00dfem, Ungew\u00f6hnlichem. Und genau das habe ich hier gefunden.<\/p>
<\/strong>Als Chef de Rang im Hauptrestaurant bin ich f\u00fcr meine eigene Station verantwortlich und begleite die G\u00e4ste oft w\u00e4hrend ihrer gesamten Reise. Ich sorge daf\u00fcr, dass der Service jederzeit reibungslos, aufmerksam und auf h\u00f6chstem Niveau abl\u00e4uft. Dabei gehe ich individuell auf W\u00fcnsche ein, achte auf jedes Detail und arbeite eng mit einem internationalen Team aus Service, Galley (K\u00fcche) und Sommeliers zusammen.<\/p>
<\/strong>Es ist die Kombination: Hochwertiger Service, Teamwork auf engem Raum und gleichzeitig die Welt entdecken. Kein Tag ist wie der andere. Ich treffe spannende Menschen aus aller Welt, entwickle mich beruflich weiter \u2013 und wache jeden Tag an einem anderen Ort auf. Was will man mehr?<\/p>
<\/strong>Definitiv die Fahrt durch die Tower Bridge in London. Die Musik, das Licht, die Kulisse \u2013 ein echtes Highlight! Auch das Eisbaden in Gr\u00f6nland werde ich nie vergessen. Das sind Momente, die man nur hier erlebt.<\/p><\/p>
<\/strong>Mach den Schritt \u2013 du wirst es nicht bereuen! Nat\u00fcrlich braucht es Offenheit, Flexibilit\u00e4t und den Mut, sich auf ein ganz neues Leben einzulassen.
