With a late summer mix of sun, wind and clouds, incredible displays on the water and a real passion for cruises, the 10th Hamburg Cruise Days came to an end on Sunday evening – a summary of a brilliant weekend.

The 10th Hamburg Cruise Days, held from 12 to 14 September 2025, offered a maritime mood that only Hamburg can conjure up. Eight impressive ships, spine-tingling performances on the Elbe River, a promenade with visitors flocking to the cruise lines’ information stands, music, dance, culinary delights and activities for young and old: the varied programme attracted large crowds to the port over the weekend.

“Our guests enthusiastically embraced the shore programme and thousands of spectators came to the waterfront in the evenings to watch the incredible displays”, said organiser Uwe Bergmann. “We achieved our target of 250,000 visitors to the event area alone, and around half a million people visited the port of Hamburg over the three days of the event.”

Michael Otremba, Managing Director of Hamburg Tourismus GmbH: “The Hamburg Cruise Days and Blue Port Hamburg again impressively demonstrated the aspects that define our city’s maritime identity: people coming together to experience the fascination of ships and the unique atmosphere in the port. This event is so much more than a tourist highlight – it is a celebration of togetherness that reflects the pride of the people of Hamburg as well as the international appeal of our city.”

The port at such close quarters – only in Hamburg

The evening highlights of the Hamburg Cruise Days in particular drew enchanted crowds to the riverside: a showcase featuring the VASCO DA GAMA with fireworks on Friday evening, the Grand Hamburg Cruise Days Parade with a large firework display on Saturday evening, and the double departure of the MSC Preziosa and Norwegian Dawn which closed the festival on Sunday evening.

Co-organiser Katja Derow, redroses communications: “The Port of Hamburg is not only synonymous with trade, it has always very much been associated with arrivals, departures and exploring the world. The Hamburg Cruise Days, with atmospheric highlights like the Grand Hamburg Cruise Days Parade, allow people to soak up this special magic. There are very few other cities worldwide where people can experience the port and the deeply authentic maritime atmosphere at such close quarters.”

Co-organiser Uwe Bergmann, uba GmbH, was also highly satisfied: “It’s something truly special when so many people from Hamburg, Germany and around the world come together harmoniously to experience and celebrate cruises. Our concept aims to bring a relaxed cruise feeling ashore, and the atmosphere and the positive feedback show that we have succeeded in doing so. We are delighted that the entire event went off peacefully and without incident. We would like to thank everyone involved on land and at sea, and of course the participating cruise lines: they all contributed to this wonderful event and allowed our visitors to experience unforgettable moments.”

A total of eight cruise ships came to the port for the event weekend: AIDAperla and AIDAsol (AIDA Cruises), EUROPA (Hapag-Lloyd Cruises), Mein Schiff 4 (TUI Cruises), MSC Preziosa (MSC Cruises), MS Sans Souci (PLANTOURS Cruises), Norwegian Dawn (Norwegian Cruise Line) and VASCO DA GAMA (nicko cruises). For the first time, the organisers departed from the concept of a single premium sponsor; for this year’s event, three major cruise lines – AIDA Cruises, MSC Cruises and TUI Cruises – were secured as equal main sponsors.

The final highlight on Sunday, Blue Port Art – and ahoy Harbour Birthday!

Early on Sunday evening, visitors to Hamburg Cruise Days were invited to pull out their handkerchiefs or phones and wave goodbye to two ships at the double departure, which was accompanied by music and a commentary. Hamburg Cruise Days officially ended at 8 pm.

Blue Port Hamburg will continue to shine until 21 September, creating a very special evening atmosphere in the port as Blue Port Art. This year, its magical blue illuminations were even more spectacular thanks to the involvement of HHLA: the Hamburg port and logistics group celebrated its 140th anniversary with the light-up of the Blue Port on 10 September.

The next Hamburg Cruise Days are scheduled to take place in two years’ time: from 17 to 19 September 2027, the port will once again be celebrating the magic of cruises.

However, fans of Hamburg and its port only have to wait until next year for the next maritime event: from 8 to 10 May 2026, Hamburg celebrates the 837th birthday of its harbour. The event will feature numerous ships, a colourful harbour mile and the grand arrival parade (8 May 2026 at 1:30 pm) to start the party.

An elegant promenade featuring cabaret performances, irresistible culinary delights and travel information, an opportunity to enjoy the vibe in the port and soak up some of the magic of cruises: the second day of the Hamburg Cruise Days attracted tens of thousands of people to the waterfront to experience one of the highlights of the festival: the Grand Hamburg Cruise Days Parade in the evening.

Thrills in the illuminated port

Eight ships called in on Hamburg during the three days of the 10th Hamburg Cruise Days, five of which lined up in the evening for the Grand Hamburg Cruise Days Parade: Mein Schiff 4 (TUI Cruises), AIDAperla (AIDA Cruises), MSC Preziosa (MSC Cruises), VASCO DA GAMA (nicko cruises) and MS Sans Souci (PLANTOURS Kreuzfahrten).

Against the stunning backdrop of the Blue Port Event illuminations, accompanied by music, a commentary and joined by a fleet of 16 escort ships headed by three Hadag ferries, the parade sailed down the Elbe River. Visitors gathered in the port hours before the parade started, eager to secure the best spots to watch the unique spectacle and see these giants carefully manoeuvre into position. The crowning highlight of the evening was a spectacular firework display over the Elbe. Three of the five cruise ships – Mein Schiff 4, AIDAperla and VASCO DA GAMA – also departed the port with the parade and are now heading for their next destinations.

Only one day left to experience the magic

A special treat awaits cruise and ship enthusiasts at the finale of Hamburg Cruise Days on Sunday: the simultaneous departure of two cruise ships. At around 7 pm, the MSC Preziosa will set sail from Steinwerder and meet the Norwegian Dawn at the Elbphilharmonie. Accompanied by music and commentary, both ships will then head out to sea amid a farewell of waving and cheers from the spectators on land. The promenade between Landungsbrücken and the Elbphilharmonie will be open on Sunday from 11 am to 8 pm, and Blue Port Hamburg will remain illuminated until 21 September.

There are more exceptional events on the water lined up for visitors on Saturday and Sunday.

Thousands of visitors flocked to the 10th Hamburg Cruise Days on Friday to stroll along the waterfront, savour the atmosphere, wave to ships and soak up those first thrilling moments. This unique event opened on Friday afternoon, attracting crowds to the waterfront between Landungsbrücken and the Elbphilharmonie to enjoy the relaxed maritime atmosphere and discover the wide choice of attractions along the promenade: culinary delights, cabaret and the showcases presented by the participating cruise lines.

Friday evening marked the first highlight of Hamburg Cruise Days 2025: the atmospheric staging of the VASCO DA GAMA on the Elbe. At around 9 pm, the classic cruise ship, which belongs to the Stuttgart-based shipping company nicko cruises, glided downstream against the backdrop of the Blue Port Hamburg illuminations accompanied by music and fireworks.

The EUROPA (Hapag-Lloyd Cruises) was the first ship to enter the port on Friday morning for the Hamburg Cruise Days. It starred in the official opening of the new Hamburg Cruise Centre HafenCity in the evening and left the port again at around 10.30 pm.

A total of eight cruise ships are making an appearance at the Hamburg Cruise Days from 12 to 14 September 2025: AIDAperla and AIDAsol (AIDA Cruises), EUROPA (Hapag-Lloyd Cruises), Mein Schiff 4 (TUI Cruises), MSC Preziosa (MSC Cruises), MS Sans Souci (PLANTOURS Kreuzfahrten), Norwegian Dawn (Norwegian Cruise Line) and VASCO DA GAMA (nicko cruises). Details of the ships’ layovers and terminals can be found here, and more information about the individual ships can be found here.

The highlights of the next two days

Five of these cruise ships will be in port on Saturday evening for the next highlight on the programme: the Grand Hamburg Cruise Days Parade, where the festively illuminated ships sail down the Elbe together from 9 pm on against the backdrop of the blue illuminations in the port, accompanied by music and a commentary. The grand finale of the parade will be a spectacular firework display over the Elbe. The order of the ships is Mein Schiff 4 (TUI Cruises) – AIDAperla (AIDA Cruises) – MSC Preziosa (MSC Cruises) – VASCO DA GAMA (nicko cruises) – MS Sans Souci (PLANTOURS Kreuzfahrten). It’s worth getting there early to grab a good position to watch these majestic ships manoeuvre into position and master the complex navigational challenges in the port of Hamburg.

The charming programme of events along the promenade will also continue on Saturday and Sunday, attracting visitors with a wide range of culinary delights from street food to home-style cooking, cabaret and culture, activities for children, cruise flair and promotions from the cruise lines. The event site will be open on Saturday from 11 am to midnight and on Sunday from 11 am to 8 pm.

On Sunday evening, visitors can look forward to another maritime high note: the joint departure of two majestic cruise ships. At around 7 pm, the MSC Preziosa will set sail from Steinwerder and meet the Norwegian Dawn at the Elbphilharmonie. Accompanied by music and commentary, both ships will then sail gracefully downriver to the sea.

Blue Port Hamburg will accompany the Hamburg Cruise Days 2025 even after the grand finale: this year, as Blue Port Art, it will continue to shine after the Hamburg Cruise Days weekend until Sunday 21 September.

From 12-14 September 2025, Hamburg will be hosting the 10th Hamburg Cruise Days as the city again becomes a hotspot for cruise and travel fans from across Europe. The stars of this year’s event are eight cruise ships, breathtakingly presented on the river and flanked by a varied programme on the waterfront and the magic blue lights of Blue Port Hamburg.

The Hamburg Cruise Days are widely considered the world’s most beautiful cruise event: every two years, its unmatched maritime vibe attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators to the waterfront in Hamburg. In 2025, the Hamburg Cruise Days celebrate their tenth anniversary, and eight fabulous cruise ships will be there to celebrate this milestone in style (in alphabetical order): AIDAperla and AIDAsol (AIDA Cruises), EUROPA (Hapag-Lloyd Cruises), Mein Schiff 4 (TUI Cruises), MSC Preziosa (MSC Cruises), MS Sans Souci (PLANTOURS Kreuzfahrten), Norwegian Dawn (Norwegian Cruise Line) and VASCO DA GAMA (nicko cruises).

Michael Otremba, managing director of Hamburg Tourismus GmbH: “The Hamburg Cruise Days are a truly unique experience – they bring together maritime culture, a joyous festival mood and a stunning artwork in an event that shines far beyond the city. Together with Blue Port Hamburg, they put Hamburg firmly on the map as a global cruise destination, delighting cruise operators and visitors alike. The event is also a driving force behind future trends in cruise tourism.”

The highlights of the event weekend from 12-14 September include several glittering showcases on the River Elbe: On Friday evening, the VASCO DA GAMA will be spectacularly staged, followed on Saturday evening by the Grand Hamburg Cruise Days Parade, which this year features five ships, and finally, on Sunday evening, spectators can look forward to an extraordinary double departure (s. Events on the water).

From 10 September, artist Michael Batz will be transforming the port of Hamburg into the magical Blue Port Hamburg: since 2008, this magical illuminated artwork has been an integral part of the Hamburg Cruise Days and will continue to shine after the Hamburg Cruise Days are over, bathing the port and its many landmarks in a magical blue light until 21 September.

The waterfront – welcome to the captivating world of cruises
In 2025, the Hamburg Cruise Days again invite spectators to enjoy some shore leave and enjoy a brilliant programme and gastronomical delights at the heart of the port. Highlights of the shore programme along the event site from Landungsbrücken to Elbphilharmonie include showcases by the participating cruise lines, which will be providing a wealth of information and entertainment plus great special offers. A wide choice of food and drink stalls invite visitors to linger and relax, while a lively mix of cabaret, crafts and activities promises fun and entertainment for all age groups.

“The Hamburg Cruise Days are a uniquely immersive event that allow people to experience the magic of cruises, Hamburg as a destination and our port close up and at first hand”, says co-organiser Katja Derow (redroses communications). “For the event’s 10th anniversary, we invite everyone to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, watch the majestic ships and showcases on the River Elbe and experience the entertaining programme on land. Above all, we encourage our visitors to rediscover the sheer joy of deceleration, which is such an essential part of cruising on the rivers and seas of the world – and the polar opposite of the stress and hectic pace of our everyday lives.”

One licensor and three main sponsors
For the first time, organisers uba gmbh and redroses communications have moved away from the concept of a single premium sponsor. For this year’s event, alongside Hamburg Tourismus GmbH as the licensor and other partners and supporters, three major cruise lines – AIDA Cruises, MSC Cruises and TUI Cruises – have been secured as equal main sponsors. They are represented at the event with one or more ships and will also be presenting their services and destinations on the promenade. “This union of three cruise lines represents a paradigm shift in the ten-year history of our event”, says organiser Uwe Bergmann, managing director of uba. “These key players have joined forces to inspire people to discover the fascinating world of cruises. With its unique atmosphere and highly entertaining programme, the Hamburg Cruise Days offer the ideal stage.”

Also actively involved in the Hamburg Cruise Days 2025 are Cunard Line with a special anniversary show truck and nicko cruises with a spectacular ship display (s. Events on the water) and a presentation of the cruise line on the promenade.

Cruise Week: Seatrade Europe trade fair open to cruise fans for the first time
This year, the Hamburg Cruise Days and Seatrade Europe – Europe’s leading trade fair and conference for ocean and river cruises – are more closely interlinked than ever before: on Friday, 12 September, the trade fair will open its doors to non-trade cruise enthusiasts for the first time with “Destination Discovery Friday”. From 10 am to 2 pm, visitors can discover new cruise destinations, ranging from Europe to the Caribbean, gain exciting insights into modern on-board technology and innovations, and gather inspiration for their next dream trip. The ticket shop has been open since 15 August 2025. For only €5 per person, the 400 tickets available are valid for admission to the exhibition and an entertaining stage programme.

Official opening of the new Cruise Center HafenCity
To coincide with Hamburg Cruise Days, terminal operator Cruise Gate Hamburg will officially open the new Cruise Center HafenCity in Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier on the evening of 12 September 2025. Guests can look forward to a festive evening in the presence of Hamburg’s First Mayor, Dr Peter Tschentscher. The event will also feature the presentation of the highly coveted Cruise Guide Awards 2025, one of the industry’s top accolades.

HAMBURG CRUISE DAYS 2025: THE EVENTS ON THE WATER

Friday evening, 9 pm – showcase with VASCO DA GAMA and a firework display
The Hamburg Cruise Days officially open on 12 September in the afternoon, the perfect time to schedule a relaxed stroll along the waterfront and get in the mood for the evening. The evening’s highlight is the showcase of nicko cruises’ elegant VASCO DA GAMA, which can be admired on the Elbe River from 9 pm, along with a spectacular firework display.

Saturday evening, from 9 pm – the Grand Hamburg Cruise Days Parade
A parade of ships, gracefully sailing down the river in formation with Blue Port Hamburg in the background: the Grand Hamburg Cruise Days Parade, which starts at 9 pm, is the highlight on Saturday evening. It’s worth getting there early to see these majestic ships manoeuvre into position. The parade will be accompanied by music and a commentary – and will end with a spectacular firework display over the river.

These ships will be taking part (in the following order): Mein Schiff 4 / TUI Cruises – AIDAperla / AIDA Cruises – MSC Preziosa / MSC Cruises – VASCO DA GAMA / nicko cruises – MS Sans Souci / PLANTOURS Kreuzfahrten.

Mein Schiff 4, AIDAperla and VASCO DA GAMA will sail out of the port as part of the parade.

Sunday evening, from approx. 7 pm – the double departure
The Hamburg Cruise Days 2025 ends on a high note with a rare double departure on Sunday evening. Around 7 pm, MSC Preziosa will depart from Steinwerder and will meet Norwegian Dawn at Elbphilharmonie. Accompanied by music and a commentary, both ships will sail gracefully downriver to the sea.

A full list of the arrival and departure times of the ships can be found here.

HAMBURG CRUISE DAYS 2025: THE SHORE PROGRAMME: FROM LANDUNGSBRÜCKEN TO ELBPHILHARMONIE

Blue Port Hamburg – daily from 10-21 September in the evening:
It is both a work of art and a dazzling showcase of the city: Blue Port Hamburg by Michael Batz. From the light-up on 10 September 2025 at approx. 9 pm, the Blue Port Event will illuminate the riverside in a blue light. And as the blue lights bathe Hamburg’s landmarks in a blue glow, Blue Port will also be celebrating the 140th anniversary of HHLA, the port logistics company. As Blue Port Art, it will continue to shine after the Hamburg Cruise Days weekend until Sunday 21 September.

Kids’ World
A vibrant programme of events for our youngest visitors. At the Kids’ World at Landungsbrücken, young sea pups can look forward to games and creative activities. From face painting to crafts and lots of fun activities – young and old are welcome to join in.

In summer 2026, lovers of the north will be spoiled for choice: MSC Preziosa, the “Precious One”, will set sail from Hamburg on 17 departures. Among them are two 14-night voyages through Norway’s famous fjords to Svalbard, and two 11-night cruises to the North Cape – the very edge of Europe. Those wishing to explore Iceland’s untouched volcanic landscapes can choose from five 11-night itineraries, calling not only at Reykjavik but also at Ísafjörður, Akureyri, the Orkney Islands and Scotland. On three 10-night cruises, the ship will visit Ireland and Scotland, where dramatic coastlines, gentle meadows and the untamed Highlands await. New in 2026 are two 7-night itineraries, one to Norway’s fjords and one to Scandinavia’s vibrant capitals – Oslo, Kristiansand, Copenhagen and Stavanger.

Encounters with polar bears, arctic foxes and reindeer – and a voyage into the midnight sun

From Hamburg, MSC Preziosa sets course for Scandinavia in June and August on 14-night cruises. The first stop is Molde on the Romsdalsfjord, famed for the spectacular “Atlantic Road” and “Trollstigen” mountain pass – two of Norway’s most scenic routes. On the way to Tromsø, home to the striking Arctic Cathedral, the ship passes the Vesterålen archipelago, one of Norway’s best whale-watching regions. Balcony views are well worth it here, as the chances of spotting whales and orcas are high in summer. Tromsø is the last port before reaching Svalbard.

North of the Arctic Circle, where the sun never sets in summer, lies the Svalbard archipelago. Rugged islands and fjords here are 60 per cent glacier-covered. For just six weeks each summer, the tundra is snow-free and the fjords ice-free, creating the brief season when reindeer, arctic foxes, seals, whales – and the famous polar bears – roam a truly unique wilderness. From Longyearbyen, the journey continues south to the North Cape. Europe’s northernmost accessible point rises 300 metres above the Arctic Ocean, with a sweeping view from its stark plateau.

The route then leads into the 116-kilometre Nordfjord and its picturesque arm, the Faleidfjord, to reach Olden, framed by towering peaks. To the southeast, Jotunheimen – Norway’s highest mountain massif – dominates the skyline. The final stop before returning to Hamburg is Stavanger, with its quaint white houses and medieval cathedral in “Gamle Stavanger”. Nearby lies the Lysefjord, home to one of Norway’s most iconic sights: the Preikestolen, or “Pulpit Rock”, a sheer cliff with breathtaking views across the fjord.

MSC Preziosa sails these North Sea voyages twice around the midsummer solstice, departing Hamburg on 26 June and 9 August. Prices start at €2,269 per person in a Bella interior cabin, including full board and hotel service charge.

Rugged Highlands, rolling meadows, ruined castles: touring Ireland and Scotland

The landscapes of Britain and Ireland are on show in three MSC Preziosa sailings from Hamburg on 20 May, 13 September and 4 October. The voyage begins in Cork on Ireland’s south coast, known for its coastal walks, lush countryside and historic castles. Next is Dún Laoghaire, the gateway to Dublin, with its charming quarters and major sights such as St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin Castle and the magnificent Trinity College Library.

In Belfast, the narrow alleys of the “Belfast Entries” are filled with shops and old pubs, while the grand Victorian City Hall and bustling St George’s Market recall the city’s industrial heyday. The ship then calls at Greenock in western Scotland, close to the enchanting Loch Lomond and within easy reach of both Edinburgh and Glasgow. Edinburgh captivates with winding lanes, castles and historic landmarks, while Glasgow impresses with Victorian grandeur, from the People’s Palace and Winter Gardens to vibrant street art and world-class museums.

The journey continues to the Orkney Islands, with wild beaches, windswept cliffs, ancient stone circles and lush fields in one of Scotland’s most remote landscapes. Before returning to Hamburg, MSC Preziosa calls at Invergordon, gateway to the Highlands, where peat bogs, castle ruins and, of course, Loch Ness await.

The October sailing follows a slightly different route, swapping Cork, Dún Laoghaire and Invergordon for South Queensferry near Edinburgh, Stornoway in the Outer Hebrides, and Liverpool. Fares start from €1,369 per person in a Bella interior cabin, including full board and hotel service charge.

At dawn we arrived at Ocean Cay: the red-and-white striped lighthouse and the outline of the small Bahamian island were already visible from afar. At first it looked like a model from a miniature wonderland, but this impression quickly faded – it is very much real.

We went ashore and enjoyed an iced coffee from the island café – open air, of course, with our feet in the sand. Strolling further, we found a quiet stretch of beach at the family lagoon, with its powdery white sand and relaxed atmosphere. The water was perfect: crystal clear, refreshing and gently rolling.

For lunch, we visited the buffet restaurant in the centre of the island, included in the trip. There were grilled meats, pizza, pasta, burgers and salads. Alternatively, guests could return on board to the elegant à la carte restaurant or the larger buffet. After lunch, we browsed the island’s boutiques, run by locals.

In the afternoon, we had booked the ‘Lighthouse Climb’. We climbed more than 200 steps to the viewing platform and enjoyed a panorama of the entire island. This tropical paradise offers over two miles of white sandy beaches across eight separate sections, with endless opportunities to enjoy the sun and the water. We slipped on fins and snorkels to explore the underwater world of the 165-square-kilometre marine reserve.

The private island is also home to the MSC Foundation’s Super Coral Programme, which works to restore the coral reefs and expand knowledge of coral conservation. Researchers from around the world are attempting to breed coral species here that can better withstand the temperature fluctuations caused by climate change.

As the day ended, the island’s sunset was a highlight: glowing orange skies, streaks of cloud and the blood-red sun sinking into the sea marked the close of our trip to paradise. We walked back to the pier, boarded the ship and sailed into the night.

For a journey that leaves a lasting impression, travelers need time to connect with new places and absorb different cultures. The Slow Cruising concept by nicko cruises is designed precisely for this purpose. But it also supports sustainability: smaller ships carrying a maximum of 220 guests, dispersed excursions with smaller groups – all of this helps reduce pressure on destinations and avoids the overtourism that has increasingly resulted from budget airlines and sharing platforms.

Credits: nicko cruises Schiffsreisen GmbH

Leading the way in inland waterway environmental protectiont

nicko cruises is a pioneer in environmental protection on rivers. Its river ships operate exclusively with low-emission fuels. The diesel used meets the EU’s strictest standards, with a sulfur content of just 0.0001 percent. The company is also testing HVO 100 – a diesel fuel made from plant oils, waste, and residual materials that can reduce greenhouse gases and air pollutants by up to 90 percent.

Another key to sustainable cruising is shore power capability: every river ship in the fleet is equipped with a connection for shore-side electricity, allowing for port operations without diesel generators. This reduces emissions, cuts noise, and helps maintain air quality.

Energy efficiency is naturally in the operator’s own interest: it protects the environment and lowers operating costs. As a result, energy-saving LED lighting, smart lighting controls, and efficient HVAC systems are standard on board.

Waste and wastewater management are also crucial. Each ship features its own reverse osmosis system to purify water through a complex process – resulting in water that can be safely returned to the environment. Residual sewage sludge, by contrast, is disposed of by certified specialists at the ports. Food waste is also minimized through a simple yet effective measure: a multi-course menu is served at the table – and on many ships, guests choose their meals in the morning, allowing the kitchen to plan more efficiently.

nicko cruises holds the Green Award Silver certification – a quality mark for ships that meet high standards of environmental and operational safety. The company also participates in the “Fair Cruise Work” initiative with Nautilus International, advocating for fair working conditions in the cruise industry.

On nickoVISION, state-of-the-art propeller technology and an ECO Pilot in the wheelhouse help reduce fuel consumption. Thanks to an innovative hull design, nickoSPIRIT can operate with a 552 kW engine, saving approximately 20 percent fuel compared to conventional engines.

When it comes to waste and wastewater, nickoSPIRIT also features cutting-edge technology. Partnering with PureBlue, the ship is equipped with a biological wastewater treatment system so efficient that the resulting water is no longer considered waste – it can be safely discharged into rivers without harming the environment.

She’s a classic of the seas: the ocean ship VASCO DA GAMA, built in 1993, stands for everything cruising once was – elegance, tradition, and unhurried travel. Rather than modern minimalism, guests on board are welcomed by authentic cruise atmosphere, maritime charm, and an inviting ambiance. Preserving this “soul” of the ship while investing in cutting-edge technology – that is what sustainability looks like today. And VASCO DA GAMA beautifully demonstrates how environmental responsibility and cruise tradition can go hand in hand.

Sailing sustainably

One major step toward eco-conscious operations is the newly installed shore power connection. It allows VASCO DA GAMA to draw electricity from the grid while in port, significantly reducing CO₂ emissions and contributing to climate protection.

To ensure a cleaner future, the ship uses ultra-low sulfur fuels. In ports and environmentally sensitive areas (the so-called ECA zones), VASCO DA GAMA runs on MGO (Marine Gas Oil), which emits considerably less particulate matter and soot. In line with the EU’s Green Deal, nicko cruises also turns to biofuels from renewable sources: the elegant cruise ship is partially powered by biodiesel made from waste products such as used cooking oil or plant-based residues. In addition, a particularly eco-friendly underwater coating helps prevent biofouling – saving up to six percent in fuel consumption.

Credits: nicko cruises Schiffsreisen GmbH

Smart technology and fresh ideas for environmental protection

With around 1,000 guests and 550 crew members on board, a significant amount of wastewater is generated. VASCO DA GAMA uses an innovative treatment system based on membrane technology to remove bacteria, microplastics, phosphorus, and nitrogen. The resulting treated water meets bathing-water quality standards and is even permitted to be discharged into the Baltic Sea – one of the world’s most stringently regulated maritime areas.

All five engines are equipped with SCR catalytic converters, reducing nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 95 percent – fully meeting the latest environmental standards for sensitive zones such as the North Sea, Baltic Sea and the Norwegian coast.

Wherever possible, nicko cruises uses biodegradable materials, avoids waste, and eliminates single-use items. In the Club Bistro buffet restaurant, meals are served exclusively by the crew – a concept that promotes mindful consumption and has led to measurable reductions in food waste since its introduction.

Naturally, the ship’s machinery and systems are digitally controlled to ensure optimal resource management throughout all technical operations.

Discover the world in style – while protecting the planet

VASCO DA GAMA shows how two worlds can be united: the world of traditional, elegant cruising and that of modern technologies pointing the way forward. Only by actively promoting sustainability will we continue to be able to explore and enjoy the most beautiful regions of our planet by ship in the future.

When one of the Cunard Queens docks at the Landungsbrücken, the Hanseatic city becomes, if only for a moment, a stage for grand entrances, elegant silhouettes, and worldly stories: For two decades, the arrivals of Cunard ships have been a fixed part of the city’s maritime calendar — sometimes bathed in golden morning light, sometimes veiled in Elbe fog. For many Hamburg residents, it’s a familiar, almost ceremonial moment when the imposing silhouettes of these ocean giants slowly glide through the harbor. And for all those boarding, it marks the beginning of a journey that goes far beyond the destination — a journey into a world of style, service, and sensory impressions.

Because stepping aboard a Cunard Queen is not merely boarding a ship — it is stepping onto a stage.

Welcome to the red carpet

On board a Cunard Queen, everyday life begins to fade — and a sense of occasion takes over. It’s in the way guests are welcomed: with a smile that goes beyond simple politeness. It’s in the architecture, which doesn’t just impress but invites. And it’s in the little rituals — from afternoon tea to the evening aperitif — that turn every voyage into a stylish experience.

Whether strolling along the sweeping staircases, catching that first glimpse of the Grand Lobby, or listening to live music in the ballroom — those who travel here, travel with poise. And with the feeling that time has suddenly made space for itself again.

It’s the soft carpet underfoot that greets guests in the Grand Lobby. It’s the elegant uniforms of the bellhops, whose British courtesy and hint of nostalgia recall an era when travel was still an event. It’s the perfectly mixed Negroni served at sunset — on deck with views across the open sea, or in the Commodore Club overlooking the ship’s bow.

It’s the Cunard Red Ale in the Golden Lion Pub, infused with British cheer and camaraderie. It’s the plush armchairs of the Royal Court Theatre, where guests sit back as a touch of Broadway comes to life on stage. And it’s the festive gala evenings, when life on board transforms into a sparkling sea of evening gowns, suits, and golden details — a celebration for all the senses.

A farewell with a view

And when the Cunard Queens once again set course for the open sea, more than just the echo of a ship’s horn remains in Hamburg. What lingers is the memory of a special moment on the waterfront, a quiet pause between ebb and flow — and a gentle longing to one day come aboard.

Because sometimes, all it takes is a glance at the Elbe to feel how vast the world can be — and how stylishly it can be discovered.

When the Queen Mary 2 docked in Hamburg for the first time in July 2004, it marked the beginning of a maritime love story. Whether it’s the Queen of the Seas, Queen Elizabeth, Queen Victoria, or Queen Anne: their visits turn the Elbe into a stage for cosmopolitan elegance. And it’s the people of Hamburg who help write this story — gathering by the thousands along the shores to bid the Queens a warm, Hanseatic “Tschüss” on their journey.

Technical innovations, the expansion of the circular economy and social responsibility: these are the three areas that AIDA is focussing on in its sustainability efforts. Hamburg CruiseMag offers a glimpse into some of the building blocks of this comprehensive undertaking.

Innovative technologies: toward net-zero emissions in ship operations

Electricity as if from a socket – for shore power, the ships require a special connection. © Aida Cruises

AIDA’s goal is to make cruising more resource-efficient—and to reach net-zero emissions in ship operations by 2050. The company is relying on viable and increasingly sustainable technologies to reach that target: shore power, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and biofuels play key roles in this strategy.

Shore power

Ships typically remain in port for 8 to 10 hours a day, sometimes overnight. Shore power allows ships to shut down their engines during this time and draw electricity from local grids instead—significantly reducing emissions in port areas. AIDA already uses shore power wherever it is available. Currently, 15 ports in seven European countries offer this option. The company’s goal is to use shore power from renewable energy sources in all destinations. And this trend is gaining momentum: Copenhagen inaugurated its facility in June 2025, and AIDAnova was the first cruise ship to connect.

Liquefied natural gas (LNG)

In 2018, AIDAnova became the world’s first cruise ship capable of operating on LNG; it was joined by AIDAcosma at the end of 2021. LNG reduces particulate emissions by over 95%, nearly eliminates sulfur oxides, and significantly lowers nitrogen oxides (by 85%) and CO₂. Already, about 33% of AIDA guests—based on total fleet capacity—sail aboard LNG-capable ships. LNG is, however, only a transitional fuel: the propulsion systems of these ships are also compatible with future e-fuels and biofuels.

A refuelling with liquid gas from the water. © Aida Cruises

Energy management

Continuous advancements in energy management help AIDA further reduce emissions. This includes optimized routing and speed profiles, as well as intelligent software for efficient onboard energy use. Newbuilds benefit from innovative hull and propeller design to reduce propulsion energy needs. Air conditioning—a major energy consumer—has also been rethought: AIDA uses absorption chillers that convert excess heat into cooling energy, reducing fuel consumption.

Alternative energy in testing

AIDA is also exploring e-mobility at sea. AIDAprima has been retrofitted with the world’s largest battery storage system in maritime use. Charged by the ship’s engines, it can supply power during short operations—such as docking, undocking, or navigating sensitive waters—allowing 100% emission-free cruising in those moments.
In 2022, AIDA also began testing 100% biofuel from GoodFuels, derived from recycled biological waste like used cooking oil. This fuel avoids competition with food crops and prevents deforestation, supporting biodiversity and global food security. For this effort, AIDA received a Silver Recognition in the “Technology Leader” category at the 2025 ESG Shipping Awards.

Pioneering energy use: a look inside the AIDAprima’s battery storage system. © Aida Cruises / Marc Klein

Circular economy: conserving and preserving resources

Given the planet’s finite resources, AIDA is committed to conserving raw materials, keeping them in circulation as long as possible, and reducing waste. AIDA pursues this through comprehensive environmental management in waste, materials, and food, as well as through pioneering projects that point the way forward.

Water, waste, and recycling management

Water is central to the cruise experience. AIDA uses reverse osmosis systems to convert seawater into freshwater—even brewing its own onboard beer from it. Water-saving measures are in place across the fleet, including in showers, restrooms, and laundry facilities. Wastewater is treated to near-drinking water quality using membrane technology and is disposed of via certified waste handlers in port.
Avoiding waste is a top priority. AIDA prefers reusable items over single-use and operates state-of-the-art recycling centers on board. Compared to 2018, the fleet has reduced single-use plastic items by more than 79%.

Soap made from recycled coffee grounds

Coffee is popular on board—and produces a lot of used grounds. In 2023, AIDA partnered with Hamburg-based startup Coffeecycle to turn coffee waste into premium natural cosmetics. This supports both waste reduction and circular economy goals. The resulting AIDA soap contains Fairtrade coffee grounds from the ships, coconut and olive oil, and is free of microplastics.

First collect, then recycle: used carpet and other textiles are turned into new carpet on board. © Aida Cruises

Carpet recycling pilot project

During a recent dry dock of AIDAdiva, 45,700 square meters of carpet—roughly the size of six football fields—were removed for recycling and will be reused as new flooring aboard AIDAluna. Together with Hamburg’s Oceancircle GmbH, AIDA developed a process to recycle used carpets, curtains, and canopy fabrics from its cabins.
The new floor coverings on AIDAdiva are equally sustainable: the allergy-friendly carpets are made from recycled plastics, such as fishing nets and old carpets. They can also be broken down at the end of their life cycle and recycled again.

Social responsibility: commitment to people and a better future

AIDA is committed to creating positive change and promoting sustainable development in tourism—not only as an employer, but also in its relationships with guests, partners, and communities at its destinations

Safe places for children’s education: AIDA Cruise & Help’s school projects make it happen. © Aida Cruises

AIDA Cruise & Help

Travel and do good—this is the idea behind AIDA Cruise & Help, an initiative supporting education in some of the world’s poorest regions. Since opening its first school in Cebu City, Philippines, in 2019, AIDA has helped launch more than 80 school projects in over 20 countries, made possible by guests, crew, and partners. More than 12,600 children now have access to safe learning environments.

Cycling sustainably

Since 2019, AIDA has partnered with Kiel-based bicycle manufacturer my Boo, which produces bamboo bikes in Ghana while funding a local school of over 500 students and creating jobs. Today, the AIDA fleet includes over 1,100 my Boo bikes—including e-bikes and cross bikes—for excursions.

Barrier-free cruising

Cruises should be for everyone. AIDA is committed to making travel on board as accessible as possible for people of all needs and ages. Nearly all public areas are barrier-free, and specially equipped cabins are available. Guests are invited to share their accessibility needs in advance, ensuring a worry-free vacation. An expert advisory council also supports AIDA in continuously improving accessibility on board and ashore.

Mein Schiff stands for modern premium holidays at sea. With the concept of a floating resort, Mein Schiff cruises are aimed at guests who value space, generosity, quality, and personalised service.

The Mein Schiff 4, like the entire Mein Schiff fleet operated by TUI Cruises, is designed from bow to stern for comfort and relaxation. Spacious decks, 80 % balcony cabins, verandas of up to 47 square meters, and quiet relaxation areas are key features of the ship.

The cabins are tastefully furnished in a stylish, individual atmosphere with many amenities. The first coffee of the day, freshly brewed with the in-room espresso machine, can be enjoyed privately in the cabin or on the balcony. The cabin design is bright, friendly, and timelessly modern.

With Mein Schiff® Premium Inclusive services, nearly all food and beverages in the restaurants, bars, and bistros are included in the cruise fare. A wide range of sports options, use of the wellness area and saunas, onboard entertainment, childcare, German-speaking tour guidance, and gratuities are also included. This makes budgeting easy – allowing guests to fully enjoy the personalised service and signature Mein Schiff feeling.

The Mini, Kids, and Teens Clubs also offer a varied programme for younger guests. The Beach Club, with its transparent dome roof, ensures a carefree beach atmosphere all year round – perfect for relaxing during the day and partying in the evening.

Guests can enjoy a thrill and a spectacular panoramic view from the glass Skywalk, 45 meters above the sea. This Kussmund (kiss-mouth) ship also features a spacious organic spa, a modern fitness area with an outdoor sports deck, the AIDA Plaza with several shops, and the Lanaideck with infinity pools and relaxation islands – offering something for every taste.

Speaking of taste: 12 restaurants and 18 bars & clubs leave nothing to be desired in the culinary department.

Another highlight of AIDAperla is the Theatrium – a light-flooded venue for unforgettable entertainment moments.

Our onboard programme is rounded out by first-class entertainment featuring in-house shows, diverse live music, and expert lectures on regional topics.

In 2023, VASCO DA GAMA was honored by sonnenklar.TV with the “Goldene Sonne” (Golden Sun) award as Ship of the Year.

The MS Sans Souci is exactly the small, agile boutique ship that makes it possible to discover “true new territory” off the beaten paths. Whether on the Peene, Weser, Hunte, or Ems rivers, with MS Sans Souci you travel on waterways inaccessible to larger ships. And no one has to compromise on comfort!

From the spacious foyer with its inviting lobby and reception, guests can choose to relax in the cozy onboard library or the impressive panoramic lounge. The lounge offers stunning views of the passing landscapes.

The stylish restaurant serves culinary delights, and the cabins offer the comfort of the best outside locations with French balconies (Elbe Deck). Comfortable hotel beds ensure restful nights, and true relaxation can also be found on the sun deck with its sunshade sail.
